02—Bridging the Gap: Promoting Socialization & Hands-On Learning in Middle School Classrooms
AIA (American Institute of Architecture) Classroom + Muzo
Located at booth 1753

We are delighted to collaborate with the AIA on this important space. The intention of our space is to “Bridge the Gap” between elementary school & high school, by creating a successful & unique middle school classroom. We will have a heavy focus on inclusive & empathetic design, while using educational theories to inspire a classroom that promotes comfortable socialization & hands-on, interactive learning. Along with “Bridging the Gap,” for middle schoolers, we want to “Bridge the Gap” between teachers & how they use their new space, to maximize the positive impact it has on the students.

AIA Concept Statement:
“Middle schools classrooms are an unexplored portion of a student’s development, but serves as a very important transitional period for a student between elementary and high school. Through the use of John Dewey’s Principles of Education & Vygotsky’s Theory of Cognitive Development, we aim to create a middle school classroom that will successfully, “Bridge the Gap,” of this transitional period through inclusive & empathetic design. Inspired by the education theories we have studied, our classroom design will promote comfortable socialization & hands-on, interactive learning through scale-able interactions, blurring the lines between Dewey & Vygotsky’s Theories. Another key element to this design is “Bridging the Gap,” between teachers and their space, to help them better understand how to utilize their classroom. This will maximize the effectiveness of the classroom for students & staff, putting empathetic & inclusive design at the forefront of the school year.”

03—Pure Imagination Studio (Classroom of the future)
Designed by Multistudio Architects + Muzo
Located on Level 3 – Classroom 370 BCEF

Goal
This versatile kit-of-parts provides educator agency and supports key principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL): offering multiple means of engagement, representation, and action & expression to support every learner. The wide range of positionalities that learners bring to classrooms today means no single setting is likely to create a strong sense of belonging for everyone, every day. The reconfigurability of this space means it can easily transform from session-to-session, or day-to-day, to support varying positionalities.

Focus
The “freedom” to affect one’s place, position, and posture within the space supports more opportunities for self-regulation. The overall organization of the classroom supports the opportunity for organic furniture arrangements throughout the space while still providing a sense of spatial organization to ground users within the space. This allows student reconfigurations to occur without causing as much spatial chaos. Learners that don’t thrive in larger open spaces have options for pre-made sensory spaces in which to retreat including the Box Lounger, the Agile Pod, and the ability to enclose sub-spaces with X-Bricks.

Impact
Pragmatically, the space supports a wide range of learning modes including group-based work, project-based work, independent work and direct instruction. The versatile seating supports a range of ergonomic needs from elementary through adult learners. Half of the classroom (areas with green flooring) feature outdoor grade furniture, plants, and a color palette relating to colors and finishes of the natural environment. These cognitive connections to nature provide restorative properties to reduce stress, lower heart rates, improve mood, extend attention spans, and enhance cognitive function – all aspects of biophilic design.

Products featured include Kite® Tables, Juice Tree®, Alfresco Mini, K-seat, K-stools, Juice Bot®, Go Storage, Flomo, Signs soft seating, Box Planters, Waltzer, Box Lounger.
